Pruning
We use the term
balance a lot in the wine industry, but never more
appropriately than in our desire for a balanced
vine. Pruning is an annual opportunity to direct
each vine towards that balance and Northwest
Vineyard Service’s experienced pruning crews can do
just that. We start by evaluating the prior year’s
growth to determine if the appropriate amount of
fruit wood was maintained. Proper selection of
renewal spurs and the next year's fruiting canes and
their positioning are crucial for the next year’s
production. Pruning choices not only effect the
growth and production of the vine for the following
growing season, but will also have lasting effects
on the vine’s permanent structure and future
production. We focus on maintaining vine height,
preventing congestion in the head, position of spurs
and canes and setting the vine up for future
pruning.
